Land Gut Höhne and Neanderthal Museum Mettmann
At the place where the most famous Neanderthal fossil was found, the new Neanderthal Museum opened its doors to the public on the 10th of October 1996. It was the day when long lasting efforts to build an adequate museum came to a happy ending.
The Neanderthal Museum is one of the most successful archaeological museums in Germany. About 170.000 visitors per year come to see the award-winning multi-media exhibition, which was updated in 2006. Any donation, endowment or testamentary promise you feel able to make will help us to secure the successful work at the museum.
You might support the acquisition of new exhibits, the special exhibition, or be supportive of a junior scientist.
Gut Höhne, a modern, family-run Conference and Wellness Hotel with two restaurants – Gutshofrestaurant and Tenne – is surrounded by a quiet and peaceful landscape and close to the natural reserve. The castle-like estate lies in the surroundings of Düsseldorf, 1500 meters away from the highway exit Mettmann/Hubbelrath, near Neandertal. Furthermore the nearby metropolis Cologne and the Ruhr region – the largest urban agglomeration in Germany with a rich industrial heritage – offer a huge range of cultural activities.
