Cologne’s very name reveals its Roman past: the 2,000-year history of this Roman ‘Colonia’ is still very visible in the city today. Visitors know they are walking through the oldest major city in Germany. The symbol and undisputed centre of Cologne is its imposing gothic cathedral, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and Germany’s most visited sightseeing spot. Many other tourist destinations are within walking distance of the cathedral, including world-class museums such as the Museum Ludwig and the Roman-Germanic Museum. A total of 42 different museums and 110 galleries promise a variety of cultural delights for visitors to this cathedral city.
