Barrier-free experiences in the Sauerland

Forests, lakes and romantic little timber-framed towns

The Sauerland is particularly popular with hikers and cyclists. The densely forested region with its many lakes is an ideal holiday destination for some time out in nature.

The Sauerland is not called the “land of 1,000 mountains” for no reason. Hiking trails and cycling routes offer magnificent panoramic views. Anyone who finds this “up and down” approach too demanding can explore the natural landscape along the former railway lines that meander through the region on level ground.

Adventure in nature

Whether hiking or cycling – the many lakes, mountains and forests make Sauerland a destination for nature-loving holidaymakers. Möhnesee lake is located in the heart of Arnsberg Forest Nature Park and, as an international nature reserve, is home to rare birds such as great crested grebes, cormorants and kingfishers. Visitors can experience the beauty of the ten-square-kilometre lake, which is also fondly called the “Westphalian Sea” by Sauerland locals.

Healthy time out

The good air and brine deposits in Sauerland offer positive health benefits. At Bad Sassendorf moor and brine spa, brine emerges from springs and fountains. The freshly collected brine trickles over blackthorn branches at the graduation works, generating sea-like air. Brine baths or drink therapy are also supposed to strengthen the immune system and have a beneficial effect on the body.
