Bielefeld for families

From the castle to the climbing park

Whether it’s the climbing park, a visit to the castle or petting animals at the Animal Park, Bielefeld has a lot to offer for young families.

The Sparrenburg is the most famous landmark in Bielefeld and a popular destination for many people, including families. You can visit the aboveground part of the 13th-century fortress for free throughout the year; other parts of the facility are only accessible from April to October. One highlight is the annual Sparrenburg festival, when the castle is transformed into the historical backdrop for a medieval spectacle complete with jugglers, knights and minstrels.

Heimat-Tierpark Olderdissen (Olderdissen Animal Park) is another popular family destination. More than 450 animals ? 90 different species, including martens, bears and wild boar ? bustle about in a compound of some 16 hectares just outside of Bielefeld. Some of the animals are rarely found in the wild any more ? some not at all. The petting zoo with its sheep and goats is especially popular among children. For those looking to become animal experts, tours are available on various topics or kids can participate in an exploration rally. Children aged up to 12 years can take part in a Sunday school held once a month, where participants can learn about and experience plants and animals. Those who simply cannot wait for Sunday should visit the animal taxidermy exhibition, where they can see 650 species of different local wildlife. Admission to the exhibition is free.

The climbing park on the Johannisberg in Bielefeld awaits active holidaymakers. Professional climbers and beginners alike can get their money?s worth at the more than 90 climbing and balancing stations situated at eight different heights and four practice routes. Challenges include balancing on giant tractor tires, jumping over canyons or hurling yourself onto a surfboard at speed. Special three-hour climbing tours are available for children over eight years of age.
