The Eifel for families

Discovery trails and farm holidays

Our tips for family activities in the Eifel: The wild natural landscape offers a perfect setting for family getaways and days out.

Families with kids will find plenty to enjoy in the Eifel region. At the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern, for example, visitors can get an insight into how people lived in these parts centuries ago. Germany?s second-largest open-air museum has recreations of typical buildings of the Rhineland on a 95-hectare site, including farmhouses, wind-mills and water-mills, workshops, a school, a bakery, a dance hall and a chapel. A number of events throughout the year draw large numbers of visitors, including the St. Martin?s Day parade, the harvest festival and the historic fair.

Plenty of adventure also awaits on the discovery trail in Nettersheim. This six-kilometre-long circular walk leads through the beautiful Urft valley with its unspoilt floodplain landscape and ridges offering panoramic views. Activities for kids and their parents along the way include fossil hunting, listening through the ear-trumpet and a climbing course in the undergrowth. Since the path has been specially designed for young visitors, it received a rare ?Löwenzahn? (dandelion) rating from the Association of German Nature Parks and the German TV programme of the same name in 2014.

Also in Nettersheim, the ?Naturzentrum Eifel? nature discovery centre offers something different for families with kids every Sunday from April to October, from a high-ropes climbing course to a guided walk with a herbalist to tracing the remains of long-gone cultures. Youngsters can enjoy the adventure playground with treehouses, climbing towers and swinging ropes every day of the week.

For a longer stay, a great selection of farmhouse accommodation is available in the Eifel. Visitors should look in particular for the ?NatUrlaub bei Freunden? (nature holiday with friends) seal of quality. The choice of sleeping arrangements takes in everything from a haystack to a generously sized apartment. Many farmhouses also have extras like wellness facilities for the parents while the kids rollick around the farm.
