Gymnich Mill

Water, water, everywhere in Rhine-Erft-County

Children in particular will love this old water-mill in Rhine-Erft-County: There are loads of opportunities to experiment and enjoy water-based fun.

Things can get quite wet at Gymnicher Mühle (Gymnich Mill) in Erftstadt – but not because of a leaky roof in this historic building. Since summer 2014, a water fun park has been established at the nature park centre in Rhine-Erft-County. While aimed at children and school pupils in particular, adults will also enjoy the discovery, playing with water and experimenting and generally finding out more about life in and along the river Erft.

The main attractions at the new water-themed centre are “KM51 – Das Erftmuseum” and a water fun park. The museum’s unusual name is derived from its location at kilometre marker 51 on the Erft. In the multimedia exhibition in the former mill storehouse, visitors can follow the roughly 100-kilometre course of the river from its source near Nettersheim in the Eifel to the point where it joins the Rhine near Neuss in the Lower Rhine region. Twelve interactive stations provide comprehensive information on the river habitat. One particular highlight is the walk-in “Flusskörper” river run, where the flora and fauna of the Erft are brought to life.

The adjoining water fun park is a place where visitors, especially the young ones, can really let loose. There are water cannons at the castle for a water fight, and a little pond where rafts manoeuvred by poles provide a good test of strength and skill. There are even opportunities for little experiments in the 1.5 hectare park: an assortment of play stations along a created stream invite visitors to play about, observe and discover.

School pupils also have the opportunity to temporarily relocate their classroom to Gymnich Mill. The “water workshop” provides plenty of space for classes to experience lessons in a new and interesting way.
