A day at Museum insel Hombroich & a night at the rocket station
Museum Insel Hombroich in Neuss
A group tour of an exceptional recreation area on the Lower Rhine. Art, nature, architecture and world history combine for unforgettable experiences
Museuminsel Hombroich is a special place far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The ethos of this island museum is to let visitors find their own way around rather than overloading them with information. Museuminsel Hombroich is designed for leisurely discovery and unforgettable experiences where art meets nature.
During your group visit, an artist will guide you through the museum, explain the backgrounds of exhibits and relate the origins of this amazing place.
Your accommodation is located right beside Museuminsel Hombroich: the “Kloster” guesthouse at the Hombroich rocket station is a unique place to spend the night.
The collection housed at Museuminsel Hombroich includes oriental art, archaeological artefacts and works by Jean Fautrier, Lovis Corinth, Alexander Calder, Hans Arp, Henri Matisse, Yves Klein and Gotthard Graubner. The museum also has a significant collection of pieces by Kurt Schwitters.
The painter Gotthard Graubner conceived ten pavilions to present the collection. He set about establishing a dialogue between art and cultural objects spanning two millennia and regarded this as a work in itself. Graubner believed that labels were a disruptive influence; he wanted the works to convey their own historico-cultural significance without the use of information plaques. Museuminsel Hombroich still follows this ethos today.
The pavilions designed by the sculptor Erwin Heerich are lit purely by daylight, which bathes the exhibits in a different light depending on the time of day or year.
