aachen tourist service e.V.

A surprising weekend of culture in Aachen with layers of European history, precious art treasures and exciting contemporary art

Map of NRW

Prepare to be surprised by the layers of grandiose history waiting to be discovered in the imperial city of Aachen. The cultural highlights of your weekend will include a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aachen Cathedral as well as its treasury, which houses one of the most important collections of ecclesiastical treasures in Europe. A guided tour will also let you discover the main sights of Aachen.

Built over 1,200 years ago, Aachen Cathedral still looks as impressive as ever. It became the first architectural and art history ensemble in Germany to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. See one of the most significant buildings in Europe for yourself while soaking in the charm of the historic old town!

You can begin your short break any way you like. Why not start with a relaxed tour of Aachen Cathedral to experience a memorable slice of European history. Afterwards, you should make your way to the cathedral’s treasury for a short guided tour of one of Europe’s most significant collections of ecclesiastical treasures. The precious historical objects on display include the “Cross of Lothair”, the “Bust of Charlemagne” and the “Proserpina Sarcophagus”.

The next day, a guided tour of the city’s picturesque alleyways and historic squares will reveal lots of interesting and surprising information about the history of Aachen. And if you are still curious to discover more, free admission to your museum of choice in Aachen will help you round off your cultural weekend in the imperial city! You could, for example, choose to visit the renowned Ludwig Forum for International Art if your interest lies in contemporary art works, or the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum with its exceptional collection of paintings from the 12th to the 20th centuries. Then there is the Couven-Museum with its exhibition of interior design in the 18th and early 19th century, the International Newspaper Museum and the Centre Charlemagne, the new museum for the city of Aachen.
