The Rhine Cycle Route for Beginners

Niederrhein Tourismus GmbH

2 nights’ accommodation with generous buffet breakfast, luggage transport between hotels, information pack with maps, admission to Archaeological Park and Roman Museum, free hotel parking

Experience nature, culture and beautiful landscapes up close on this three-day cycling tour. Wesel will be the first stop on your itinerary. Visit Willibrordi Cathedral, amble in the city centre and keep an eye out for the famous donkeys of Wesel. The next morning, make your way across the impressive bridge to the left bank of the Rhine and onwards to Xanten. This cathedral town and legendary birthplace of Siegfried is the perfect spot to take a breather. Take a walk through the historic old town and be sure to visit the LVR Archaeological Park and LVR Roman Museum. In the afternoon, you will cover the remaining distance to Rees along the left bank of the Rhine. The oldest town in the Lower Rhine is known for its beautiful river promenade. Continuing along the old branches of the Rhine and taking in the stunning landscape, you will tackle the last (if you wish) stage of the cycling tour before arriving at Emmerich am Rhein. It is worth stopping here for refreshment at a promenade café before taking a diversion to Dutch-flavoured Elten. You can extend your tour with a visit to Kalkar or the former Hanseatic town of Grieth. Emmerich am Rhein is your final destination. You may book an extra night here or prepare for your homeward journey.

Stages:

1. Wesel - Xanten - Rees (approx. 30 km)

2. Rees - Emmerich am Rhein (approx. 28 km)
