Map of NRW

Day 1: Schwerte - Witten (approx. 30 km)

Make your own way to Schwerte. Start by taking a stroll through the historic old town and maybe pay a quick visit to the town’s mustard mill. You will discover several monuments to the history of the Ruhr Area as you continue to the first stage finish point in Witten – the towering ruin of Hohensyburg between Dortmund and Hagen, the railway viaduct in Herdecke and the LWL Nightingale Coal Mine Industrial Museum in Witten.

Day 2: Witten - Essen-Kettwig (approx. 55 km)

After a brief detour to the idyllic Mutten valley, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path continues to Hattingen. The old town with its protected monuments is a pretty place to enjoy a second breakfast before you visit one of the local industrial heritage highlights – the LWL Henrichshütte Ironworks Industrial Museum. Leaving Hattingen, worthwhile detours further along your route include the Railway Museum in Bochum-Dahlhausen and the Krupp-founded Margarethenhöhe residential area in Essen.

Day 3: Essen - Duisburg (approx. 25 km)

You can take it easy as you approach the end point of your tour. After a stroll through the lovely old town of Essen-Kettwig, you will cycle on as far as Mülheim an der Ruhr. From here, it is worth taking one last detour to the medieval Broich castle. You will have reached your destination when you spot the 25-metre-tall “Rhine Orange” sculpture at the point where the Ruhr meets the Rhine.

Treat yourself to a relaxing cold drink at one of the many cafés at Duisburg’s Inner Harbour to mark the end of your tour.
