Tomás Saraceno – in orbit
Visit the elaborate installation by artist Tomás Saraceno and combine your stay with a night in Düsseldorf
“In Orbit” is the title of an elaborate installation created by artist Tomás Saraceno for the large glass cupola of the K21 Ständehaus. Installed more than 20 m off the ground, the netted web comprises three meshwork levels in a structure that resembles a surreal landscape reminiscent of a sea of clouds, its delicateness, yet strength evoking associations of a spider’s web with giant soap bubbles, as those bold enough to step out onto it appear from below to be “swimming in the sky”.
Spanning a total of 2,500 m² the safety netting is held apart by half a dozen “spheres”, airfilled PVC balls reaching up to 8.50 m in diameter. The observer instantly experiences a feeling of floating and weightlessness. The artist’s latest work zeroes in on a utopian space with aspects of social interaction and the archetypal fears and joys of man.
