I’ve talked about the urban landmarks, street food festivals and awesome record shops that make the Ruhr region such a hot and urban place to be… but I’ve been holding out on sharing some of the coolest secrets when the sun goes down on the Rhine River.

Think urban, industrial and wild.

The Ruhr region is home to some of the coolest, most surreal nightclubs you’ll ever hear of. From apartment rooms, train stations and old movie theaters, there is no space that goes unused in the Ruhr.

Here are 7 surreal Ruhr nightclubs that you’re certainly going to have to add to your exploration bucket list.


Apartment 45 in Bochum

Apartment 45 is literally 3 levels of penthouse apartments with two dance floors, a pool, a fireplace, a rooftop terrace and plenty of space to let loose and enjoy the electronic beats of hip hop, trance and dancehall music.

Bahnhof Langendreer in Bochum

Bahnhof Langendreer is a train station in Bochum that is home to many of the coolest events that take place throughout the year. Whether you’re heading to Langendreer for a concert, theater performance, movie, cabaret or political demonstration, there are tons to do in this party junction.

Altes Kino in Bottrop

Directly translated from German to English, Altes Kino is an old cinema. Where movies once played, the grounds have now been opened up to host parties and club nights every Friday and Saturday (charts, the 80s, 90s, disco fox, rock, electronic and house). Nightrooms in Dortmund

Pick between 5 rooms playing 5 different beats (house, 2000 remixes, soul/R’n’B, charts). Nightrooms is a massive club perfect for any style.

Tentorium Festivalpark in Duisburg

Picture an incredible festival under one huge tent, every Friday and Saturday. Tentorium Festivalpark in Duisburg plays charts, hip hop, R’n’B, EDM, house and techno, just pick your favorite night.

Goethebunker in Essen

Known locally as the “unconventional nightclub in a bunker”, the Goethebunker in Essen is actually a permanent club with themed and featured parties throughout each month.

Ballermann 6 in Mülheim an der Ruhr

If you know anything about the German holiday party destination, you’ll know that Ballermann 6 is a popular party location in Mallorca. Ballermann 6 in Mülheim an der Ruhr brings the “Mallefeeling” to the Germans by hosting Mallorcan style club nights.
