Illegal raves in today's residential block

Here, on a site where residential blocks now stand, was where the “Ruine” once stood for a while at the end of the 1980s. It was Cologne’s prime location for techno, according to some people even before Frankfurt and Berlin jumped on the techno bandwagon. The “Ruine” was an occupied industrial site with demolition charm and a highly characterful beer garden. The well-maintained art of illegal raves (now continued above all on the right-hand bank of the Rhine) has its origins here.

Since there were no smartphones at that time, the only recordings are on wobbly filmed at Cologne’s wildest underground techno spot.
