100-Castles-Route
Almost 1,000 kilometres of cycle path through romantic Münsterland
Romantic strongholds and imposing stately homes: Cyclists can experience the region’s magnificent architecture on Münsterländ’s 100-Castles-Route.
Cycle paths in Germany don’t get much better than the 100-Schlösser-Route (100-Castles-Route) in Münsterland, NRW. Stretching an incredible 960 kilometres, it makes its way through the region’s green park landscapes, passing romantic strongholds, moated castles and stately homes, as well as impressive palace gardens and grounds. Cyclists following the 100 Castles Route will journey through time and the history of Münsterland architecture, as every single era has left its traces here.
On this popular route, active cycle tourists can choose between the entire distance, individual sections, or four self-contained circular routes. The northern circuit runs from the flat landscape around Münster and northern Münsterland to the Tecklenburg region. Cyclists on the eastern circuit will discover why this area is so well known as horse country. The western circuit runs past some of the most beautiful architecture in Westphalia: Anholt Castle, Ahaus Castle and Raesfeld Castle are all famous far beyond the borders of Münsterland. The southern circuit is also a particularly impressive demonstration of architecture, with even more castles and palaces than the other circuits.
