Art Cologne

Traditional art fair with its finger on the pulse of the times

View, enjoy, marvel, buy: The Art Cologne art fair is an event for international art lovers, collectors and gallery owners that is not to be missed.

Art Cologne has been a fixture in the art world's calendar for decades. The world's oldest art fair for modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st century dates back to 1967, when Cologne-based gallery owners Hein Stünke and Rudolf Zwirner held the first Kunstmarkt Köln, thus laying the foundation for what the Rhineland and adjacent Benelux countries have come to represent today: an artistic hub with the highest density of industry, capital and collectors in Europe. Some 200 international galleries present their works of art at the festival’s exhibition, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, multiples, installations, performance art and video art.

Contemporary art fair

Gallery owners, artists, collectors and museum greats come together every year in a stunning temporary museum of contemporary art. The works displayed at the Cologne-Deutz exhibition halls every spring are truly far from ordinary. The fair has been enlivened by a progressive mindset since its inception; it has repeatedly reinvented itself and has always met with particular success when its founders have focused on the fair’s most basic concept: the world's most important galleries exhibit carefully curated art in such a way that members of the general public who are interested in art are just as welcome as international art jet setters. Since taking charge of the fair in 2008, Swiss-American Daniel Hug has ensured that Art Cologne is once again awash with the splendour of the innovative idea of a modern art fair.

During Art Cologne, the alluring and the disturbing hang alongside each other in the Cologne exhibition centre. It’s hardly worth counting the list of names of galleries represented and artists featured in the fast-paced art world. The basic principle nevertheless holds: high-profile European and American art forms the backdrop for a unique industry get-together to which the public has access. No matter where the compass of the art world is pointing, visitors to Cologne get a snapshot of the trends presented by multi-million dollar art greats and up-and-coming stars. The fair invests in works from all segments of modern and contemporary art in all price ranges. Full of contemporary art, the “New Positions” and “New Contemporaries” programmes are committed to reliably providing artists at the beginning of their careers and young galleries a platform for presentation. As a gateway to the international art world, Art Cologne is firmly embedded in the scene on the Rhine and, with its numerous collaborations with major museums, offers the ideal starting point for discovering the artistic side of NRW.
