Castle Burg

Solingen

The hilltop castle in the Bergisches Land region offers a unique panoramic view. Visitors can use a mobile app to explore the museum and other rooms in the castle. A chairlift makes it easy to reach the castle. Events such as open-air concerts and knights' games invite visitors to linger throughout the year.

If you take the oldest double chairlift in Germany from Unterburg to Oberburg to reach the castle at the top, you will know what a treasure awaits you here after climbing 91 meters in altitude. The scenery at the top of the mountain is breathtaking. The view falls on the tranquil Wupper river and sweeps over the widely ramified hills and valleys in the surrounding area. No wonder Adolf II von Berg chose this place as the ancestral seat for his family around 1130.

Reconstruction in historical style

However, Schloss Burg is not only worth a visit because of the unique panorama and the remarkable history of its builders - including Count Adolf V von Berg, who elevated Düsseldorf to the status of a city. Today, the complex is a landmark of the Bergisches Land region, a real tourist magnet and a multifaceted place of experience. The Bergisches Museum is housed within the magnificent walls of the restored fortress, which was called Neuenberge Castle until the 15th century, fell into ruin between the 17th and 19th centuries and was finally rebuilt in historical style from 1890 by an association and many helpers.

Visitors can find out more about the history of the castle and exhibits such as historical weapons, large murals and silver goblets on a tour with a museum guide, cell phone or tablet. Since 2015, the core complex with its ancestral gallery, bower, chapel, armory and battlements can be explored virtually using an app with augmented reality and 360-degree views. Important personalities such as the former lord of the castle tell exciting anecdotes on the mobile devices. In the Knights' Hall, for example, they recount important events such as the Battle of Worringen in 1288.

Guided tours, banquets and markets

Culture lovers also get their money's worth with a wide variety of event formats. Spooky tours scare even the most intrepid modern-day knights. Feasts make gourmet hearts beat faster. Craft and medieval markets impress with a wide range of products.

However, the yearly highlights are the large open-air concerts in the inner courtyard, comedy evenings in the hall and knights' games throughout the castle grounds. The historic castle walls give the events a very special charm.
