Oberhausen Castle

Oberhausen

The Ludwig Gallery is a haven for works of art and gems in the manor house of the complex. Paintings, photographs, drawings and contemporary testimonies can be found behind the pink façade. Tours are possible from the palace to the Kaisergarten, the LVR Industrial Museum or Europe's largest shopping center.

Oberhausen Palace is a central point of contact for fans of fine art, an eye-catcher in the middle of the beautiful Kaisergarten and a possible starting point for exciting cultural tours in the Ruhr region: The unusual building - which is located directly on the Rhine-Herne Canal and the artistically designed "Slinky Springs to Fame" bridge - catches the eye from afar with its pink façade with white accents. Museum fans enter the Ludwig Gallery, located in the three-winged manor house, through an imposing glass porch, which connoisseurs like to call a "showcase".

Treasures of a collector couple

Behind the transparent, illuminated walls, long corridors full of treasures from different areas of art open up to visitors. The gallery sets four selected accents: In the Ludwig Collection, visitors can admire the gems of the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig. In the popular gallery, comics, cartoons and book illustrations are reminiscent of well-known figures such as Donald Duck or Struwwelpeter. The so-called Lichtbild Galerie presents exceptional photographs by icons such as Arthur "Weegee" Fellig and Eve Arnold. In the Landmark Gallery, history buffs can trace the transformation of the region. Visitors can trace the development from a steel and industrial area to a cultural and leisure center. Special exhibitions are also dedicated to styles such as pop art, comic legends such as Fix and Foxi and eras of photography.

From the inner courtyard of the castle complex, which was built and designed as a count's residence between 1804 and 1820/1821, travelers can reach the small castle in just a few steps. The diverse cultural journey continues here, even if the next stop is thought-provoking. In the southern wing of the building, the specially designed memorial hall recalls the atrocities of the Holocaust with a permanent exhibition. In return, the adjoining café promises relaxation, where guests can treat themselves to a break.

Other tourist attractions

With renewed energy, a detour to a site of the LVR Industrial Museum is easier. In the St. Antony Ironworks, which is located in the Eisenheim settlement, explorers can get to the bottom of the history of the steel industry in the region. In the Altenberg zinc factory, numerous machines such as a forge hammer or a steam locomotive bear witness to the technical progress of the 18th and 19th centuries. It is located near the main railway station. Several bus lines run directly from here to the Neue Mitte, the ideal starting point for a stroll through Europe's largest shopping center, Westfield Centro.
