Landscape Park Duisburg Nord

The former steel mill offers a wide range of activities for athletes, sightseers and nature lovers

This is industrial heritage: few other former industrial sites are used so diversely, creatively, athletically and culturally as that of the Landscape Park.

The Landscape Park Duisburg Nord is no ordinary park: its approximately 180-hectare site unites industrial heritage, nature and the highlight of the park, a fascinating light installation, which bathes the park in colourful light at night. The park is located on the site of the disused Duisburg-Meiderich steelworks. Like so many other places in the Ruhr Area, it now forms an industrial heritage site: instead of being demolished, the old factory buildings, blast furnaces and Gasometer were not demolished, but were masterfully put to use in other creative, practical and aesthetic ways.

The way the land and the many industrial buildings that have been preserved are currently being used is exceptionally diverse: climbing enthusiasts can abseil through the high ropes course in the old casthouse or climb in the former ore deposit bunker. Visitors can enjoy water sports in Europe's largest indoor diving pool in the flooded Gasometer of the former smelting works. The defunct blast furnace has been converted to a lookout tower, where visitors can enjoy fantastic panoramic views across the wide, green parkland. A unique view across the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord awaits those who visit at night. The light installations by Jonathan Park create a unique atmosphere in the park and shine a spotlight on the old steelworks.

During the day the green surrounds of the industrial works’ outdoor areas offer a variety of walking and cycling opportunities. Entry to the park is free and visitors can explore the park on foot or by bicycle at their own pace. However, tours do provide visitors with the opportunity to learn more about the history of the steel mill, its workers and their living conditions.

The Landscape Park Duisburg Nord is also featured as the venue for several top-class cultural events throughout the year. Friends come together to experience the sophisticated productions of the Ruhrtriennale in the blower house. The Ruhr Piano Festival also uses this setting for some of its concerts. The three-day Traumzeit music festival is even held entirely on the grounds of the Landscape Park, making use of its unique industrial buildings and open spaces. In summer, the outdoor cinema regularly shows feature films. And in the winter, the illuminated market dazzles visitors during Advent.

The Landscape Park Duisburg Nord is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and can easily be combined with other interesting sites of industrial heritage along a cycling tour or road trip.
