The 13.5-kilometre bison trail in Aue-Wingeshausen offers picturesque views and exciting wildlife. This unique hiking trail is part of a remarkable nature conservation project and leads through the home of the majestic bison. Since 2013, these robust animals have been roaming freely through the forests of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg royal family thanks to a unique nature conservation project in Western Europe. The bison trail, which leads along soft, sometimes very narrow forest paths, invites you on a discovery tour. Small wooden plaques with bison branded on them lead you through varied forests to the Rothaar ridge. A particular highlight is the "bison wilderness on the Rothaarsteig", which is home to a second herd of bison. The trail leads from Wingeshausen over the Rothaar ridge to Schmallenberg-Jagdhaus, through the picturesque valley of the Ihrige and paths in the Bockeshorntal back to Wingeshausen. The bison trail is accessible all year round and offers numerous refreshment stops.
