Pablo Picasso Art Museum in Münster

Münster

The art museum Pablo Picasso in Münster is the first and only Picasso museum in Germany. Behind listed building facades midst Münsters old town, it accommodates more than 800 lithographs of Picasso, in its unity a worldwide one-off collection.

Despite its young age, the Pablo Picasso Art Museum in Münster, which opened to the public in 2000, has proved to be a tourist magnet for Picasso fans from around the world. The collection provides comprehensive insights into the lithographic works of the artist – in fact, it houses nearly the entire lithographic oeuvre of the world-famous Spanish artist. It also includes state prints and test prints, which give visitors a clear picture of Picasso’s artistic production processes.

Germany’s first and only Picasso museum uses its 600 square metres of exhibition space to display regularly changing presentations covering Picasso, his contemporaries and his artist friends. By continuously examining different aspects and excerpts from its extensive collection, the museum constantly sets new thematic priorities and different ways to approach Picasso as an artistic figure.

The museum is located at Picassoplatz on the Königsstraße, once the most prestigious street in the old town. The exhibition rooms are spread across two historic buildings. The Druffel’sche Hof, built between 1784 and 1788, is one of the city’s most important examples of Classical architecture. It was attached to the neighbouring Hensenbau building in the 1990s so it could be converted into a museum. The beautifully renovated façades of the two buildings that make up the Picasso Museum conceal an architecturally sophisticated building complex.

The museum space today houses more than 800 prints by Pablo Picasso, most of which come from the Huizinga collection. Thanks to the modern reconstruction of the buildings, Pablo Picasso Museum of Art is wheelchair accessible.
