Vischering Castle

Lüdinghausen

Vischering Castle in Lüdinghausen is one of the most beautiful moated castles in Münsterland. Even a walk along the moats offers marvellous views of the historic building. The picturesque castle still gives an impression of life in the Middle Ages and early modern times and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the region.

In the cultural history museum inside the castle, visitors can learn more about the history of the castle and the world of castles and palaces in the Münsterland region. Changing art exhibitions in the outer bailey and numerous cultural events and major festivals attract many visitors from near and far.

History informationThe residential and farm buildings of the defensive complex were built in the middle of an extensive system of moats on different islands. Piles form the substructure. The last defensive bastion of Vischering Castle is the round castle with its drawbridge, battlements and embrasures. Droste zu Vischering received the castle as a fief from the Bishop of Münster and made it his ancestral seat. Until 1521, Vischering Castle served purely as a defensive structure. After the fire in the same year, it was rebuilt on the old foundations in the Renaissance style. The original defensive character of the castle was preserved, but the decoration of the rooms and the addition of the magnificent hall showed the need for more quality of life. Tour information
