When the sun rises over the municipality of Swisttal, it bathes the bright white main castle of Heimerzheim Castle in a warm light. The three-winged building blends gracefully into the landscape amidst the lush green of the surrounding woods. While the first preparations are already being made for the next big event in the evening, tables are being set up and chairs are being adjusted, voices can be heard on the castle square in front of the castle. The hotel's first guests have got up.
A total of 21 stylishly furnished rooms in the red brick outer bailey offer them sufficient peace and comfort for their stay. Some start a very special day here: couples celebrating their wedding in the ballroom with up to 300 invited guests, for example, or colleagues organizing a team event in one of the five conference rooms. Other guests use the time to explore the surrounding area. They take a day trip to the Kommern open-air museum in Mechernich, the Euskirchen thermal baths or the Phantasialand amusement park in Brühl. A hike in the magnificent landscape of the Northern Eifel is also ideal for nature lovers. The packed lunch is ready and waiting.
The castle has been run by the von Boeselager family for six generations. Hospitality is very important here. The origins of the castle date back to the 13th century, when the lords of Heimerzheim had it built. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone structural changes and changed ownership, but the special atmosphere of the place has remained.
One chapter of its more recent history is closely linked to Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager, who was born at the castle in 1917. As a co-conspirator in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, he left his mark on the history of the 20th century. His grave on the castle grounds is a reminder of this to this day.
By the way: It would be far too much of a shame to visit just this one castle. NRW is the state with the most castles and palaces in Germany. To make it easier for you to choose, we have found a perfect counterpart for Heimerzheim Castle: Flamersheim Castle. Find out more about the duo here.
