Bochum Zoo and Fossilium

Bochum

A visit to Bochum Zoo is like a trip around the world. More than 3,600 animals from around 300 species live here, from the Asian dwarf otter to the Mertens water monitor and the German salmon guinea fowl to the Cuban whiptail iguana. This means that if you have just been traveling in the jungles of Southeast Asia, you may next find yourself in the mountains of New Zealand or among the giant tortoises in the Seychelles. Or would you prefer to go to the North Sea? No problem. In this case, it is also in the middle of the Ruhr area. The heart of this adventure world with its dune landscape and beach chairs is, of course, the seal pool. The nimble marine mammals can also be observed during their dives through four panoramic windows. Who do you think is faster? The seals or their feathered roommates, the Humboldt penguins, who are among the most popular animals in the park?

Tierpark Bochum, which is open 365 days a year, offers a total of around ten different adventure worlds, including a bird of prey aviary, a kea aviary and an Australian aviary with fascinating bird species as well as a display kitchen. Here, all the meals for the hungry animals are freshly prepared in front of visitors. From nutty muesli and colorful salad platters to protein-rich insect snacks. However, it is not only the living animals that attract attention at Tierpark Bochum, but also the long-extinct ones. Because in the adjoining Fossilium Natural History Museum, the journey around the world turns into a journey through time. It takes you back to prehistoric times, when dinosaurs still lived on earth. These and other fossil relatives are exhibited in the middle of the aquarium and terrarium house, among fish, snakes and lizards. Here's to being good neighbors.

You can discover the different areas and habitats on guided zoo tours or with the free and inclusive zoo app, which offers exciting games and informative contributions for all visitor groups.
