Togetherness at Zollverein

The first date

They are both well into their 30s and no longer quite so good on their feet. But they are adventurous, full of life and curious to discover new things. However, they are both a little nervous today. Because it's their first date. It's the first time the elderly gentleman and the lady with the rollator are travelling together. But what could possibly go wrong? An outing as a couple is always more fun than alone. And there is so much to discover at the Zollverein colliery in Essen: Industrial culture, nature and (perhaps also) the desire for more activities together at the end. An accessible tour through the Unesco World Heritage Site.

How thoughtful! Just like the old school, the gentleman gives us a rose to say hello. And the ice is broken between the two ...

The way of coal

The site of what was once the largest coal mine in the world is extensive and the backdrop is impressive. Most of the paths that lead past the old steel and stone machine halls are well tarmaced. But it's not really about speed on the "Way of the Coal". Especially as there are plenty of places to sit between the Colliery and the coking plant and nobody is in a hurry today anyway.

An industrial forest in the midst of industrial heritage: the fallow land between the winding tower, scaffolding and old railway tracks is a real biotope. You are sure to find a cosy spot in the shade of native and exotic trees - for a relaxing break. And perhaps for the first tentative approach?

Ruhr region history and mining stories. A tour of the Ruhr Museum in the former coal washing plant brings back memories. A glance is worth a thousand words ... especially with this impressive view over the Ruhr Area from the roof of the coal washing plant. The lift takes you up to the top in comfort.
