Castles and Fortresses Day
Experience historical locations in Münsterland anew
About 40 historical buildings will turn into cultural centres with a programme of events on the Castles and Fortresses Day in Münsterland. Several institutions that are not otherwise open to the public are involved as well. Athletic guests may join walking or cycling groups to travel between the venues.
Would you like to follow the history of a noble family in the magnificent knights’ hall? Do you prefer to explore the historic tower room on a guided tour? Might you rather stroll through the castle gardens to the sound of engaging music? All of this is possible on the Castles and Fortresses Day in Münsterland.
Around 40 locations open their doors to guests who want to immerse themselves in a different time while experiencing cultural delights for one day in June every summer. Since 2017, visitors to the event have been able to explore impressive fortresses, magnificent manor houses, historical buildings, monasteries steeped in history, and important knightly estates, including some places that are not otherwise open to the public.
A new look at sights
The treasures of the culturally rich Münsterland are presented in a new guise on this day, as some of their sections, such as castle walls, moats, or towers, will be illuminated. Readings, concerts, and performances take place in the castle courtyards while art exhibitions and hands-on activities are waiting for visitors inside the buildings.
Anyone who doesn’t want to drive from venue to venue may join walking or cycling groups that jauntily move from place to place. Several groups set out at different times, e.g. heading for Raesfeld Castle, Cappenberg Castle, Hülshoff Castle, Bentlage Monastery, Vischering Castle, or Nordkirchen Castle. Sections of the 100 Castles Route with its four circuits are also covered.
