His oeuvre has had a lasting impact on international contemporary art with pigment works, mirror sculptures and expansive installations. For this reason, the city of Duisburg and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland have awarded the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize to the Indian-British artist Anish Kapoor in 2025. To mark this special honor, the Lehmbruck Museum is now dedicating a major exhibition to the sculptor, who was born in Mumbai in 1954, from 24 April to 30 August 2026, focusing on his life's work.

The new show is the most comprehensive Kapoor exhibition in Germany for more than ten years. The focus is on works that make perception, body and space tangible in a new way and raise central questions about identity, memory, vulnerability and infinity. The interplay of Kapoor's works with the architecture of the Lehmbruck Museum is particularly appealing: light, shadow, material and reflections transform the museum tour into an immersive space of experience.

The Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize has been awarded every five years since 1966 and is endowed with 10,000 euros. Previous winners include Joseph Beuys and Rebecca Horn. The exhibition now transforms this prestigious award into a sensual and philosophical exhibition experience that shows Anish Kapoor as a master of the monumental and the metaphysical.
