Your Am­bas­sad­or of Good Taste for Düs­sel­dorf

Hol­ger Ber­ens' res­taur­ant is loc­ated in the cre­at­ive and trendy Medi­en­hafen dis­trict of Düs­sel­dorf. He re­calls that “there was­n't much more than cranes and trendy gal­ler­ies” when he first opened his doors there.

Since then, however, things have changed: modern glass buildings and the dancing Gehry buildings now dominate the harbour’s skyline. This is also reflected in Berens' cuisine. In his light-filled restaurant overlooking the harbour guests will find light Mediterranean and French fare and fine wines. New culinary experiences are also always on offer along seasonal themes. And the high quality of the restaurant is certainly appreciated: Holger Berens was awarded his Michelin star in 2007. Berens has been active as Ambassador of Good Taste for the state capital since 2014.

Why are you the Ambassador of Good Taste for Düsseldorf?
Düsseldorf has been my adopted home since 1986 – it is a region that is steeped in both tradition and modernity and offers products that are worth recognition beyond the region.

Your opinion: why can North Rhine-Westphalia be described as an epicurean region?
NRW is a state with different regions. Each is unique and distinctive, with its own local products and specialities.

What trait distinguishes an epicurean?
Epicureans are people who appreciate sensuous pleasures more than material ones and base good taste on naturalness and sustainability.

You perform at your very best every day. What do you consider the perfect culinary start to the day?
Eating breakfast together with my family.

Your dishes inspire your guests and colleagues. Which producers in your region inspire you?
I’m inspired by those producers who convey traditional values with their knowledge and produce the highest quality products.

Do you have any personal recommendations for visitors to the epicurean region of NRW?
My best advice would be to get a personal recommendation from every Ambassador of Good Taste. Here in Düsseldorf, there is a wide range of cuisines for every occasion – from top-class restaurants to pubs – enjoyably and authentically prepared with regional produce.

Last but not least: what is your motto for personal enjoyment?
Pleasure is an integral part of the business.
