Münster sewage fields

Münster

Where the city of Münster's wastewater used to trickle away, a fascinating natural paradise is now spreading out: The Münster sewage fields are one of the most impressive bird sanctuaries in Münsterland. Located between Münster and Gimbte, they invite you to take relaxing walks, quiet moments of observation and short breaks in the midst of a special landscape of water and meadows.

Over 90 ponds, reed beds, wet meadows and copses characterize the area and provide a protected habitat for numerous bird species. If you are out and about here, you should bring binoculars and some time with you: From the observation huts, viewpoints and the observation tower, new views of the diverse flora and fauna open up again and again. Sometimes waterfowl migrate over the areas, sometimes the reeds rustle, sometimes the landscape is almost meditatively calm.

The southern nature experience area is particularly interesting for visitors. It is freely accessible and can be explored on several circular trails. As a protected reserve, the northern part of the Rieselfelder is only accessible to a limited extent so that species sensitive to disturbance remain undisturbed. If you stay on the designated paths, you can experience nature here particularly intensively - and contribute to its protection at the same time. Whether as a destination for a walk, a cycle tour or a quiet moment with a view over the water: The Münster Rieselfelder show how a technical utility area can become an extraordinary place for nature conservation and experiencing nature.

Observe nature from the reed nature trail

The reed nature trail at the small reservoir is a special experience. A short, winding circular path leads through dense stands of reeds, opening up new perspectives on this special habitat along the way. Especially at sunrise, this place offers a unique atmosphere and the ideal photo spot for nature photography enthusiasts.

Deep in the Münsterland, surrounded by forests and heathland, lives the last herd of wild horses in Germany. To the west of Dülmen, around 400 wild horses roam through the Merfelder Bruch, a unique experience of nature. However, humans sometimes intervene in the natural course of events: the one-year-old stallions are regularly separated from the herd on the last Saturday in May - for the sake of peace and quiet.
