“Der Bergische” hiking between Solingen Gräfrath and Altenberg

Die Bergischen Drei - Bergisches Land Tourismus Marketing e.V.

Map of NRW

The Bergischer Weg hiking route takes you through the magnificent forests and beautiful landscape of the Bergisches Land, from Solingen Gräfrath to Solingen Burg (23.3 km), and the next day on to Altenberg (27.6 km). Spend the evenings relaxing after your day and enjoy being treated by your hosts to delicious regional cuisine.

1st day (Friday - arrival)
After your individual arrival on Friday, you can collect the keys to your rooms in the four star Hotel Gräfrather Hof in Solingen Gräfrath (www.hotel-graefratherhof.de). Leave your everyday cares behind and get in the mood for your hiking trip with a three-course menu and soft drink or Gräfrather beer.

2nd day (Saturday)
After enjoying your generous buffet breakfast and transferring your luggage to the hotel staff, you set off - with your packed lunch - on your first stage of the route, from Solingen Gräfrath to Solingen Burg. The path takes you past the Müngsten Bridge, Germany’s highest railway bridge. Here, it’s worth taking a detour to the Müngsten Bridge park, directly under the Müngsten Bridge, where you can use your entry voucher. From the terrace of the “Haus Müngsten” restaurant, you have a spectacular view over the 115-year-old railway bridge. When you reach the Hotel Niggemann in Solingen Burg in the afternoon, your luggage will already be waiting for you in your room.
Before your pleasant 3-course menu in the evening, you might have time to visit the Schloss Burg palace, the ancestral seat of the Counts of Berg. It sits majestically in an impressive location high up on the hilltop and houses the Bergisches Museum, which invites you to take a fascinating journey in time through the Middle Ages and presents in an authentic way the history of the Counts of Berg, who gave their name to the Bergisches Land region.

3rd day (Sunday)
With fresh energy after breakfast, and again taking your packed lunch, you set out on the second hike, which takes you to Altenberg. Luggage transfer is also arranged to your next destination, the Hotel Wißkirchen. You can enjoy a relaxed hike through the fields and forests without any unnecessary baggage.
There are various places to stop for a visit on the way, including the Gaststätte Rüdenstein restaurant with its idyllic location on the Wupper river, where you can cash in your voucher.
Once you reach Altenberg, you will have enough time to talk a walk through the town and visit Altenberg cathedral.
During the evening, you can relax with a two-course menu with local Bergisches Land country-style cuisine in the Hotel Wißkirchen.

4th day (Monday)
After breakfast, you will be taken back to the starting point of the tour in Solingen Gräfrath.
