Meadows and fields offer a clear view of the flat landscape. Depending on which side of the Rhine cyclists choose, small towns invite them to stroll and linger. On the right bank of the Rhine, the route passes Dinslaken and Voerde, while cyclists on the left bank pass through Moers and Rheinberg.
Past impressive industrial heritage
The starting point is the port city of Duisburg: three times a day, boat trips depart from here through the Port of Duisburg, the largest inland port in the world. At the inner harbor, visitors can enjoy a cool drink with a view of the water or fortify themselves for the onward journey in one of the restaurants. Grain used to be stored and milled here, but today Duisburg's inner harbor is a particularly attractive urban quarter.
If you have time, you should spend half a day exploring the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. Today, visitors to the disused ironworks can climb the walls of the former bunker complex, dive into the flooded gasometer or enjoy a breathtaking view over the Ruhr region from the defunct blast furnace. As dusk falls, the industrial giants are bathed in green, blue and red light - a special event not just for photographers.
With this impressive industrial backdrop behind you, the tour continues into the rural idyll of the Lower Rhine. The town of Dinslaken is also known as the green gateway to the Ruhr region. If you are looking for city and nature, this is the place for you. A little further along the Rhine is the Tenderingssee, offering a beach vacation on the Lower Rhine - with cocktails, smoothies and a dip in the cold water on hot summer days. Ideal for putting your bike to one side, relaxing for an afternoon and dreaming of a beach vacation in the south.
If you're feeling count-like, you should cross the Rhine in Duisburg and make a stop in the town of Moers. Moers Castle with the Grafschafter Museum and castle park is the town's trademark.
Romantic riverside landscapes
Further along the route between Wesel and Xanten is the Bislicher Insel floodplain landscape. Thousands of wild geese spend the winter in this romantic water landscape every year. From October to February, they appear as formations in the sky or settle on green meadows. Visitors can observe them up close with binoculars. Geese, beavers and great white egrets also make their home in the floodplain landscape.
