Castle Wissen & Castle (ruins) HertefeldJust like at home in the castle

Canoe or aeroplane, family room or bridal suite: not far from Weeze Airport and at the same time idyllically situated on the River Niers Wissen Castle and the Hertefeld Castle ruins. Both aristocratic residences have been family-owned for generations and pass on this feeling of home to their overnight guests. No matter whether they are travelling alone or as a couple, with friends or with children. The journey is always short. Especially as there are only a few paddle strokes between the two castles and boat tours are available.

Guests at Wissen Castle spend the night with Fritz, Clemens or Friedrich Karl, Aunt Wirtz, Lisbeth or Isabelle. They were all once members of the noble von Loë family, whose ancestral seat has been the historic walls in Weeze for more than 550 years. Today, they are the namesakes of the 21 lovingly designed guest rooms and flats, which have been furnished in the former servants' quarters and in the princess tower with a view of the castle grounds. Overnight and other guests can find out more about the history of the castle itself, which was first mentioned in 1372 and expanded over the centuries to include a three-winged outer bailey and a so-called Boye (historic watermill), on a guided tour. Among other things, they will get to see the prestigious White Parlour and the Great Dining Room, where the high nobility used to dine. Both rooms and the mill were extensively restored in the 1970s and are now primarily used as a location for conferences, private celebrations and cultural events.

Picnic in the castle park

The atmosphere is familiar just a few kilometres further along the Niers at Hertefeld Castle. And not just because the listed ensemble of buildings has been owned by the von Hertefeld family for 23 generations. The castle was first mentioned in 1322 and then remodelled several times over the course of time - from 1600 onwards, mostly around the turn of the century. After its destruction in 1945, the family had the ruins partially rebuilt and later also tidied up the extensive castle park, consisting of an English and a French section. Today, guests staying alone, as a couple or with the whole family in one of the castle hotel's themed rooms look for a nice spot to picnic, barbecue or simply enjoy the very special "Hertefeld feeling" in a hammock. There is no timetable around the castle ruins, the Rentei, the guard house, the Hertefeldhof and the castle's own animal enclosure. The children can dig in the castle park or meet up in the games room, dinner is served at the large dining table, and if pizza is on the menu today, the delivery service will even pull up at the castle. Almost a bit like at home.
