With “Along the Color Line – Traces of a Transatlantic Modernity,” the Museum Ludwig in Cologne will present a major interdisciplinary anniversary exhibition on the art of the international Black diaspora from October 3, 2026, through March 7, 2027. To mark its 50th anniversary, the museum will place modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs—as well as literature and music—in dialogue with its own collection. The exhibition centers on the question of how Black artists perceived, further developed, or challenged European modernism. In addition, the exhibition explores how movements such as the Harlem Renaissance in the U.S. and the Négritude movement in Europe created new artistic narratives beyond colonial and Eurocentric perspectives.
The exhibition title refers to the African American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, who studied in Berlin and also wrote about Germany in 1936; this historical perspective is complemented by the voices of other intellectuals from the Black diaspora, such as Alain Locke. At the same time, the exhibition highlights structural gaps in European museum collections: Black artists remain underrepresented to this day, particularly in the field of modern art.
Works and perspectives by James Gregory Atkinson, Mildred Thompson, Herbert Gentry, and Iba Ndiaye connect transatlantic art history with local references to the Rhine region and demonstrate how migration, identity, belonging, and the culture of remembrance continue to shape the present.
