The LUDWIGGALERIE at Oberhausen Castle is dedicating the first major exhibition in the German-speaking world to Astrid Lindgren, showcasing the works of the world-famous children’s book author, including well-known illustrations from her books. Visitors can explore the fantastic world of Pippi Longstocking, Emil from Lönneberga, Lotta, Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, and many other characters.

In addition to the popular stories, the exhibition also features lesser-known works and highlights just how strongly illustrations have shaped the image of Lindgren’s characters. Artists such as Ilon Wikland, Walter Scharnweber, Rolf Rettich, and Katrin Engelking have created unforgettable visual worlds using a variety of styles—from ink and watercolor to collage—that are firmly anchored in our cultural memory.

The exhibition in Oberhausen combines childhood nostalgia with art history and welcomes families, literature enthusiasts, and art lovers alike. Under the theme “Time for Bullerbü,” the Ludwiggalerie offers a unique glimpse into the artistic diversity surrounding Lindgren’s work. It features brave children, mysterious places, and boundless adventures.
