With the special exhibition “Rubens and His Workshop—From Idea to Masterpiece,” the Siegerlandmuseum in Siegen will make a major contribution to the international Rubens anniversary year 2027 from April 25 to July 18, 2027. The occasion marks the 450th birthday of Peter Paul Rubens, one of the most significant artists of the European Baroque period, who was born in Siegen in 1577.
The Rubens exhibition at the Siegerlandmuseum brings together works from its own collection with national and international loans. In doing so, it highlights the special connection between Siegen, the Upper Castle, and the world-famous Flemish painter.
The focus is on Rubens’ workshop as a creative production center: Visitors will experience how an initial idea, a commission, or a sketch evolved into a masterpiece created through a division of labor. They will learn how motifs were subsequently widely disseminated through prints, reproductions, and marketing. Both analog and digital educational formats bring the workshop process to life.
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive program of events during the Rubens Year 2027; a highlight is the Flemish Fair on June 27, 2027, during which the Baroque artist’s birthday will be celebrated at the Upper Castle in Siegen and in the castle park.
