With the exhibition “Jörg Immendorff,” the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf will present the first comprehensive Immendorff retrospective in Düsseldorf from September 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027 —the city where the artist studied, taught, and worked for decades. Jörg Immendorff (1945–2007), one of the most internationally significant German artists of his generation, was known as a provocative “prince of painters” as well as for his politically charged visual language. Supported by the artist’s estate and curated by Felicity Korn and Westrey Page, the exhibition traces all phases of his work: from his early years at the Düsseldorf Art Academy to the final works created in his Düsseldorf studio.
Approximately 100 exhibits, including large-format series of paintings, wood and bronze sculptures, previously unseen drawings, and archival material, showcase the full range of Immendorff’s artistic output. The focus is on his exploration of the artist’s role in society, his responses to the political conflicts of his time, and the contradictions inherent in his own public persona.
Overlapping Exhibition Period: Niki de Saint Phalle
The Kunstpalast Düsseldorf is dedicating an exhibition to the famous French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle from September 10, 2026, to February 7, 2027; the exhibition dates overlap with those of the Jörg Immendorff exhibition. Visitors can discover the artist’s iconic “shooting paintings,” the famous colorful “Nanas,” performative happenings, sculptures, films, and models of monumental large-scale sculptures set in the landscape. The exhibition documents Saint Phalle’s radical struggle against patriarchal structures and for female self-determination.
