Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf

The starting point for the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf was the purchase of 88 works by Paul Klee, who had taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy just a few meters away until the National Socialists came to power in 1933.

Today, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is a museum with two locations that exhibits art on a good 10,000 square meters. With an impressive collection of works of classical modernism, including paintings by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, the state-owned gallery can count itself among the most renowned collections of modern art.

As a "place of art", the K20 on Grabbeplatz houses the permanent collection of the art collection. Here, American art after 1945 is presented in a large hall, including works by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, Jasper Johns and Frank Stella.

The centerpiece is Jackson Pollock's world-famous "Number 32". Another focus is on contemporary art with works by Gerhard Richter, Tony Cragg, Thomas Schütte, Katharina Fritsch, Imi Knoebel and Joseph Beuys.

The K21 in the Ständehaus was opened in 2002 as a venue for modern art. Under the glass dome of the former North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament, it offers space for exciting temporary exhibitions as a "place for artists".
