Homburg Castle

Nümbrecht

Embark on a journey through history from the 11th century to the present day. Homburg Castle is a place steeped in history that has a lot to tell its visitors about growth, values and change, and not just in the Oberbergischer Kreis Museum.

Homburg Castle is a landmark of the Oberberg district and at the same time a place steeped in history: the castle, situated on a wooded hill near Nümbrecht, was probably built in the 13th century by the Counts of Sayn as a hilltop castle. However, archaeological finds indicate that there was already a round tower on the castle keep in the 11th century.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the early medieval castle complex was extended and modernized to create the baroque castle style that gives it its current charm. The restored castle now houses the Oberbergischer Kreis Museum, where visitors can see permanent exhibitions on cultural history and natural history, among other things.

Open-air museum, forum and lawn labyrinth

There is also an open-air museum on the castle grounds, where visitors can see a historic sawmill and gristmill as well as a bakery from the 19th century.

An architectural extension was added to the baroque castle in 2014. The new foyer, new bright exhibition rooms and the forum now facilitate the modern use of the castle. Under the motto "Culture in Dialogue", the new forum regularly offers space for events such as concerts, readings or film screenings as well as weddings, parties or conferences.

And there is now also a highlight outside the buildings: a lawn labyrinth has been created in front of the landscape house, setting new accents in the baroque garden.
