Every spring, Düsseldorf becomes a hub for international contemporary art: that’s when the historic halls of the Areal Böhler fill with paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations. The Art Düsseldorf art fair brings together galleries, artists, and collectors. During a tour of the former industrial site in the northwest of the Rhine metropolis, curious visitors discover just how vibrant the art scene in North Rhine-Westphalia is.

Art Düsseldorf positions itself as a fair for modern and contemporary art. Works on display span from the postwar period to the present day. As you walk from booth to booth, you’ll repeatedly encounter names that are practically part of the cultural background noise in the Rhineland: Gerhard Richter, Candida Höfer, Günther Uecker, Georg Baselitz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and Imi Knoebel.

The fact that major galleries such as Beck & Eggeling, Konrad Fischer Galerie, Ludorff, Sies + Höke, Setareh, Meyer Riegger, Esther Schipper, Buchmann Galerie, and carlier | gebauer shape the fair’s profile is part of Art Düsseldorf’s DNA. It showcases big names, but it is not guided solely by them. Amid well-known positions and established programs, there is also room for discoveries: young exhibition spaces, new artistic voices, and international perspectives. The result is a journey that is at once an overview of the market, an assessment of the current landscape, and a stroll through the realms of artistic possibility.

It is precisely this mix that makes Art Düsseldorf unique: it is not an anonymous large-scale art fair, but is firmly rooted in a region that has been one of Europe’s most important art hubs for decades. Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, and the Ruhr region form a dense network of museums, art academies, collections, galleries, and off-spaces. The fair builds on this and distills this environment for visitors: compact, high-quality, and surprisingly accessible.

Curated special programs also consistently set the tone. They draw attention to themes that shape the present: fragile realities, female perspectives, international networks, or new forms of artistic practice. In the 2026 edition, which drew 23,000 guests, a special section was dedicated to artistic positions by women and explored how art can respond to uncertainty, perception, and social fractures. Another focus turned the spotlight on Asia, featuring contributions from Japan and South Korea, among others.

For travelers, however, a trip to Düsseldorf is worthwhile not just for the fair itself. The state capital has more to offer. It’s the perfect place to explore over an entire weekend of art. Cultural sites worth visiting include the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Kunstpalast, the NRW-Forum, and the Philara Collection. A stroll along the Rhine is also sure to lift your spirits.
