The LVR Open Air Museum Kommern in Mechernich is hosting a special event on the first weekend of Advent. An Advent programme that appeals to all the senses: from the smell of freshly baked Christmas cookies from the museum ovens to artistic handicrafts, atmospheric music and enchanting fairy tales to lantern tours and lively performances about the history of the Christmas tree. It allows you to understand how farming families prepared for Christmas. Pre-Christmas music plays in the farmhouse parlours of the museum houses and invites you to sing along. The entire museum and the historic houses are bathed in cosy light from natural light sources and lanterns, and traditional stories are told. In the craft room, children can make Christmas decorations and small gifts, while adults can practise traditional calligraphy for their Christmas cards in the old village school. The smell of baked apples, speculoos and printen wafts from the museum ovens. Hot chestnuts, honey cake and Feuerzangenbowle are offered in the Lower Rhine farmsteads. Various craftsmen present their classic skills and lantern tours bathe the museum grounds in warm light.
