LWL Museum Gernheim Glassworks

Petershagen

At the LWL Museum Glashütte Gernheim, glassmakers today produce glasses and bottles with the pipe as they did 100 years ago. They produce beautiful objects from red-hot mass, which visitors can admire and purchase.

The permanent exhibition at the LWL Museum presents their craft and the stages of glass production on a tour through glass history from 1800 to the present day. Visitors can learn more about the living and working conditions of glassmakers.

Glass production techniques

The team at the Gernheim glassworks has been keeping the special techniques of glass production alive since 1998. The aim of the experts is to carry the skills and knowledge of glassmaking into the future. Three glassmakers and a glassmaker keep things running in the 200-year-old glass tower of the former factory site. The glass studio is one of the few remaining manufactories of its kind in Germany.

Many buildings from the early 19th century have been preserved in their original state, including rows of workers' houses, the former factory owner's villa, the basket weaving workshop with the factory school and Gernheim's landmark: the conical glassworks tower from 1826.
