The viaduct hiking trail around Altenbeken is a 30-kilometre circular route that combines railroad history and nature experiences. Along the way, there are always impressive views of the region's landmark: the imposing railroad viaduct. With a length of 482 meters and a height of up to 35 meters, the Altenbeken Viaduct is the largest sand-lime brick bridge in Europe. It was opened in 1853 and has shaped the image of the railroad community of Altenbeken ever since.

The hiking trail starts at the Eggemuseum, where a historic steam locomotive can be viewed. From there, the route leads through varied landscapes, past sights such as the Rehberg Tunnel, the Little Viaduct and the Mariengrotte. A viewing platform above the viaduct invites you to view the impressive structure from a special perspective and capture spectacular photo opportunities.

Hikers who prefer a shorter route have the option of shortening the route to 18 kilometers. There are several rest stops along the way, and information boards provide interesting facts about the history of the railroad and the region.
