LVR Roman Museum in the Xanten Archaeological Park

All areas relevant to the audit meet the quality criteria for the “Accessibility Tested—Accessible for People with Mobility Impairments and Wheelchair Users” designation.

We have compiled some information on accessibility below. Detailed information can be found in the inspection report at the end of this text.

• The following designated parking spaces for people with disabilities are available:
• 6 spaces at the LVR-RömerMuseum parking entrance (space dimensions: 400 cm x 500 cm; distance to the museum entrance: 25 m);
• 10 spaces at the Hafentempel parking lot entrance (space dimensions: 350 cm x 500 cm; distance to the museum entrance: approx. 750 m);
• 5 spaces at the Stadteingang park entrance (space dimensions: 350 cm x 500 cm; distance to the museum entrance: 1,000 m).
• Between the parking lot (Hafentempel) and the park entrance, there is a 5 m long and 200 cm wide ramp with a 3% grade as an alternative to four steps.
• From the parking lot, the train station, and the “Bahnhof Xanten” bus stop, an easily accessible path leads to the museum.
• Access to the museum is threshold-free and step-free.
• All rooms accessible to visitors are at ground level and can be reached by elevator or via ramps.
• The elevator car (which serves all floors of the LVR-RömerMuseum) measures 110 cm by 220 cm. There is another elevator leading to the educational workrooms; its car measures 106 cm by 160 cm.
• There is a ramp with exhibits leading to the upper floor. It is 137 cm wide and has a maximum slope of 3%.
• All doors and passageways accessible to visitors are at least 90 cm wide.
• The height of the ticket counter in the museum is 80 cm at its lowest point; the counter at the ticket office and the city entrance shop is 97 cm high.
• Most exhibits can be viewed while standing or sitting.
• Assistive devices available: wheelchair, walker
• Guided tours are offered for people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. The entire tour route is fully accessible to wheelchair users without any steps. Advance registration is requested.

• There is no induction loop system in the museum.
• When an audible alarm sounds, there is no visually perceptible flashing or strobe signal.
• In the elevator, an emergency call is confirmed by an audible signal. Stairs are available as an alternative.
• Information about the exhibits is primarily provided in written form.
• Videos in German Sign Language are available on the museum’s website.
• Guided tours for people with hearing impairments and tours for deaf people in sign language are offered. Advance registration is requested.

• Assistance dogs are permitted.
• The entrances are designed with high visual contrast.
• The building signage is designed with clearly legible, high-contrast lettering.
• There are glass doors in the museum’s entrance area. These open automatically and are marked with safety indicators.
• Visually high-contrast and tactile floor indicators are available in the entrance areas of the Park Entrance and City Entrance, as well as in the entrance area to the Römer Museum ticket office.
• All elevated areas accessible to visitors are well lit—that is, bright and glare-free.
• An emergency call made from the elevator is confirmed by an audible signal. The stop position is announced by voice. The control elements are not designed with high visual contrast but are tactile and available in Braille.
• Some stair treads are equipped with visually contrasting edges.
• The exhibits are generally well-lit. Information about the exhibits is primarily provided in writing and is designed with high visual contrast. In some cases, visitors are permitted to touch the exhibits.
• Information is not available in Braille or prism script.
• Guided tours are offered for people with visual impairments and blind people. During the tours, exhibits are incorporated for visitors to touch. Advance registration is requested.

• The destination is usually within sight, or directional signs are placed at a distance that ensures they are always visible.
