LVR Lower Rhine Museum, Wesel

Wesel

A family museum where you can touch and participate!
In the historic citadel in Wesel, history comes alive and is brought to life through vivid storytelling. The museum showcases the Lower Rhine as a fascinating region where tradition and modernity are uniquely intertwined. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey of discovery through a landscape that has been—and continues to be—shaped by its people, exciting events, and the mighty Rhine River.

The museum offers:

  • an interactive museum tour.
  • a modern exhibition where learning happens naturally.
  • Media stations for playing, experimenting, and having fun.
  • the voice of Oliver Rohrbeck in the media guide.
  • a place for interaction, socializing, and variety.

Whether as a group, alone, with family, with friends, on vacation, during free time, or in class—this museum experience is always a hit!

It’s all about the Earth’s history through the millennia. Mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, and even hippos and exotic plants once called this place home. The alternation between warm and cold periods is explained through fossils, rocks, and numerous artifacts.

Ideas and goods spread across the Rhine; it serves as a source of raw materials and one of Europe’s main transportation arteries. The Hanseatic era with its far-reaching alliances, the Middle Ages with flourishing cities, and the Industrial Revolution are eras brought to life through historical artifacts, hands-on stations, and animated films. Wars and crises have left their mark on the Lower Rhine, yet they have not broken the spirit of its people.

The region has fascinating stories to tell and is a hub for festivals and vibrant traditions. Customs and language play a crucial role. The Schützenfest, Carnival, local cuisine, and St. Martin’s Day all have their place in the museum.
