Berleburg Castle

Bad Berleburg

Golden light, blue sky, green natural backdrop. In front of it, an imposing building with a black slate roof: the outline of Berleburg Residential Palace stands out almost majestically against the wooded mountain range of the Rothaargebirge. The baroque three-winged complex is an eye-catcher in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, which also boasts an impressive history.

The castle was built in 1258 by Count Siegfried I and the monastery bailiff Adolf I as a hilltop castle. It is one of the few living noble houses in Germany, as it has been continuously inhabited by the Sayn-Wittgenstein family for over 600 years. The princely family still lives in the main wing today. During a historical tour, you will discover attractions such as the stables with the princely carriage or the former court vault as well as the castle chapel, which is still used by the princely family today.

In the twelve-hectare castle park, you will come across a romantic water landscape, old groups of trees and rare plants. Almost unchanged in layout since 1750, this oasis of peace combines baroque design with the open style of English landscape gardens. A special feature is the upper garden area with orangery and sandstone figures from the 18th century, which was inspired by the royal park at Sofiero Castle in Sweden.

Guests who have explored the greenery with its magnificent rhododendron and azalea planting should definitely make a detour to the charming upper town of Bad Berleburg. The area is characterized by slate-roofed half-timbered houses and small alleyways. If you have packed suitable footwear, you can set off from here on a hiking tour that leads to art and idyllic natural scenery. A stage on the Rothaarsteig trail is just as recommended as an excursion on the Siegen-Wittgenstein Forest Sculpture Trail.

Weekend holidaymakers or families with more than one day to travel can also visit the Raumland slate mine or explore the Bad Berleburg fairytale trail. The 5.4-kilometre themed trail features well-known characters from the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and the Golden Whole send their regards.

By the way: It would be far too much of a shame to visit just this one castle. NRW is the state with the most castles and palaces in Germany. To make it easier for you to choose, we have found a perfect counterpart to Berleburg Residential Palace: Siegen Upper Castle. Find out more about the duo here.
