Steinfeld Monastery & Schmidtheim CastleHistorical Sites for a Present-Day Ecape

Nature and culture, history and security: Steinfeld Monastery and Schmidtheim Castle in the Eifel region have developed over the last few decades into modern meeting places and retreats for people who want to take time out. Time for a creative break, a contemplative time-out or the conscious perception of nature. Time for yourself. The historic buildings form a refuge and backdrop for yoga retreats and meditation, drawing and painting courses, herbal walks and forest bathing, among other things.

Steinfeld Monastery in the northern Eifel region is a monastery that lives entirely in the here and now. Founded more than 900 years ago, the Salvatorian order still lives the Christian faith here today, while also running the Steinfeld Monastery Academy and looking after the preservation of the historic buildings. The monastery complex, whose origins date back as far as 920, is considered one of the best-preserved monastic monuments in the Rhineland. In addition to the historic monastery church and today's basilica, the ensemble of buildings also includes a grammar school and a small hotel with four rooms. The academy's seminar programme is also quite secular. They range from Qigong and meditation courses to hiking, archery, photography and voice training.

The Healing Power of the Forest

The Counts Beissel von Gymnich have always been very fond of nature and people. For more than 500 years, they have cultivated and managed the Schmidtheim forest around their castle of the same name. They invite their guests here to experience and feel the healing power of the forest at first hand during seminars and excursions. In addition to people themselves, the focus is on understanding the cycle of nature's growth, decay and renewal. And as this has a lasting effect, guests also like to stay longer on the spacious estate, spend the night in the castle's own holiday flat or rent the "La Maison" holiday home in the castle park for a break from everyday life.

View of the Starry Sky

A time-out at Schmidtheim Castle or Steinfeld Monastery sharpens your view of nature and yourself. In the Eifel, however, the gaze also involuntarily wanders upwards. There is hardly any other region where you can observe the starry sky as well as here on the edge of the Eifel National Park. If you are in the area anyway, you should extend your stay by at least one night and take a guided tour of the local star park to look up at the sky. It's guaranteed to be a short night.
