Thomas Schütte is one of the most influential artists of the present day. He is regarded as an unswerving advocate of figurative sculpture. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is now presenting his diverse oeuvre in a major survey exhibition. Visitors to the K21 can admire selected architectural models, installations, watercolors and sculptures.
The human figure is always at the center of Schütte's work: expressively modeled busts that exaggerate physiognomies and hold up a mirror image to the viewer are just as much a part of it as watercolor portraits created in quick, concentrated sessions. Humor and irony run as leitmotifs through his work - visible in bizarre grimaces, playful scales and ambiguous allusions.
The artist, who is known for his unusual presentation formats, will occupy the Piazza on the first floor and the exhibition space in the basement of K21. The show, which is being created in close collaboration with Schütte himself, also represents a new examination of the Ständehaus as an institution and architecture.
