Discovering the European Bison at Rothaarsteig

The Siegen-Wittgenstein-mission: I had to find the gentle Giants Faye, Horno, Quelle and Quirly - the very special animals, who live in the region.

The European bison, better known as the Wisent, has reclaimed its position in the Wittgenstein forests. These mammals roamed this area of Germany, until human intervention lead to their demise.

Today, human intervention created a new area for the wisent to live and thrive in. In 2013, a herd of 8 bisons was released in the Wisent Wildernis at Rothaarsteig. Today, the numbers of bisons in the area is increasing and tourists can take a chance to spot them in the wild. I went for a hike at Rothaarsteig and saw them with my own eyes!
